Cloning

Human Cloning Cloning is something that has allowed scientists to take the DNA of one animal and attempt to duplicate the exact DNA in a secondary animal.

Results of early cloning experiments were spotty and resulted in many failed tests. However, with the successful cloning of a sheep named Dolly in the mid 1990s the push for cloning has increased among scientists.

The experimentation has led to human cloning conjecture and experiments along with stem cell cloning in both embryonic and existing human stem cell lines.

Hollywood celebrities have pushed for legislation allowing embryonic stem cell research. Pro-life advocates have been ardently opposed to the destruction of a fertilized embryo. Embryonic cloning was supposed to neutralize this argument, but it has only added a new dimension to the debate.

Is the meat and products of cloned animals safe to consume? Is cloning an attempt to play God? This debate has multiple facets.

Discuss Cloning In Our Forums

Pro

  • Could help establish quality controlled animal selection for human meat consumption.
  • Could be used to develop and harvest embryos for scientific research.
  • A more personal way to select human offspring.
  • Could potentially be used to bypass certain genetic disorders in more traditional conception methods.

Con

  • Most of the population remains concerned about the safety of consuming cloned animals.
  • If clone embryos are developed and harvested some would consider this a taking of innocent life.
  • Is considered among many the least reasonable means of reproduction.
  • Cost prohibitive with many failed cloning experiments in the history of this science.
